Presentation and Packaging

I think that tatting can be very difficult to display and package especially when trying to sell it, either indoors or outdoors.   Some people have been able to create some exquisite displays and I really admire the thought and care they have put into their presentations.   If you can get it right it means that your tatting will attract customers and make them more likely to buy.

This isn't a particular good photograph, mainly because it is dull and dreary today and pouring with rain, and the packing is catching the little light there is. However,  I am sure you can understand what I am trying to say.  We have to be careful that we show our work to the best advantage, but I must admit this is the bit I find the hardest to do.  Not all my work is neatly put in packages because I either don't have something suitable, or I prefer the customer to actual pick it up and look at the craftsmanship before they decide to buy.

So if anyone has any bright ideas how they present or package their tatting please share.

  1. Looks very neat and attractive. Yes, I've had occasions when things didn't sell because they were badly presented, it's tricky.

    1. Jane sometimes you can spend just as much time and thought in the packaging and presentation as in the tatting itself! I am no expert by any means and I guess there is no quick and easy answer, especially as what each of us make is all so very different. Yes very tricky!

  2. I like what you've done (might steal an idea or two), it's much nicer than what I do. I display on black velvet boards with pins and then package when sold. You are very clever though, I like!

    1. Michelle I think displaying on black velvet boards is also attractive.

  3. I like what you've done with these pieces. It is difficult. If you want people to be able to handle items, you might consider having some just for display and then people purchase the packaged ones. I think most people would appreciate that. They get to handle your work and examine it up close, but they know they are taking home a 'clean' piece that has not been handled by others.

  4. Your see through bags and name cards make for easily seen and handled items. Now put them up on a display board or fill a pretty basket.

  5. I wish I did have some good ideas. Last year when I was making crocheted button flowers, I very carefully placed each one in a tiny zip lock bag. I wanted people to pick them up and look at them without getting them all grubby. Imagine my surprise when I went to the shop to see the display, and the owner had taken them all out of the baggies! I guess we all have different ideas. Good luck with your sale!

    1. Very true we all have different ideas about displaying our items Diane which makes it difficult to know what will attract people to buy them! Thanks for the good wishes but do not expect to sell much mainly because it is a Summer Fete where people are looking for cheap things to buy!

  6. I think your packages look very nice!!! :)
Some people have a talent for displays and such, and others don't-I am one who doesn't, but it's the tatting that matters most, and your tatting looks fabulous!!!!!!!! :)

    1. Thanks God's Kid and you are so right it is the tatting that matters, but as tatters we all want our craft to be shown off in the best possible way and it is so difficult

  7. This is true Maureen, but it took me ages to source the packaging which is what I mean about time spent to actually display what we make.

  8. Where did you find the perfect bags? I have the blank bookmarks, but no bags.

    1. I bought the bookmark holders from this company http://www.celloexpress.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=246&zenid=4do4egqp9ve7k213jd111e56v3
but not direct from them went through Amazon UK which is where I originally found what I was looking for, but took me ages.

  9. I agree that your packaging is perfect, and I did also wonder where you got the bookmark bags. You certainly had to be patient to find and wait for them! Your sheet printouts are also excellent.

I had to come up with a way to protect my 3-D bells, and found clear plastic cups fairly easily, but I wanted cups with lids, and it took me several weeks of driving to various stores to find those. (This was before the internet in the 1990s.) Hope you do well!

    1. Kathy yes it did take time and effort to get the right packaging for the bookmarks. I did not do the print outs though, some one far more talented did them but they certainly do make a difference. Now finding something for 3-D bells must have been challenging. I did fairly well thanks.

  10. Your packaging looks good, you can see the pieces but they'll stay clean. Display and packaging are important for sales but you can spend as much time with that as the actual tatting and then spend so much on it that you don't make enough on the sale. Good to hear you did well.
