Yew Wood
The yew wood is beautiful and we were fortunate to be given a chunk of it, which has been seasoning outside for many years. In ancient times yew wood was used for making bows, the trees were planted in graveyards so they are a common sight around our churches in the U.K. some going back at least a thousand years.
Resting on them is this pattern http://janeeborall.freeservers.com/MotifFerrisWheel.pdf and of course I have used the version with a button in the middle. As you have gathered it is Jane's pattern.
Jane is actually helping me write out a pattern at the moment for a design of my own. I have been working on it for weeks and weeks and nearly given up many times as it is so very complicated. It is going to be a very unique pattern based on something which is very well known, especially in our family. I don't think anyone has ever attempted to make one in tatting before. I am so looking forward to it being finished!
Now you’re teasing us with hints - I look forward to seeing your pattern. The yew wood is a pretty colour.
ReplyDeleteSorry Jane to tease but there is a little way to go before it is completed.
DeleteI can't wait to see the pattern! I cannot imagine what it is.
ReplyDeleteIf you are making yew shuttles, put me down for 2.
Ah Tim if you knew a little bit more about our family, perhaps you would guess! Okay you are down for 2, will tell 'Im in the Garage'. I am hoping the grain of the yew wood will come out when they are oiled and finished off.
DeleteNow I’m intrigued! I can’t wait to find out what your pattern is going to be.
ReplyDeleteThat’s a lot of raw shuttles in the picture! I haven’t ( yet) got one made from yew.
Maureen I am so excited about the pattern. Jane and I are working at it electronically live as she test tats and corrects my notations, so we can see each other typing, which is fun
DeleteI would love to add a yew shuttle to my collection! I love the tease about your new pattern. I'm eagerly anticipating its appearance!
ReplyDeleteLet me know if you want one. No idea when the pattern will be ready.
DeleteBeautiful motif!!! :)
ReplyDeleteExcited to see your new design!! ;)
Thanks, lots of cutting and altering at the moment with the pattern
DeleteThe beautiful wood sets your tatting very well. Having seen many yew trees around the country, I had no idea of their hidden glory. Looking forward to seeing the new pattern.
ReplyDeleteAnne there is a lot of myth and folklore regarding yew trees and I always look for one in a churchyard. The pattern will be a complete surprise!
