Spring Doily Finished

It seemed to take so long tatting Renulek's Spring doily, but it was well worth the effort.  I did have to unpick bits where I had gone wrong which delayed finishing it, but finally on Saturday night it was completed.  It measures 21" wide and is the largest tatted item I have ever made.  I have used up a lot of old thread - Coats and Manuela, which was the main aim for tatting this item, but strangely enough as I look at the almost finished balls there is sadness as some of the colours are irreplaceable.   I am continuing to complete another of the doilies which I started but that will be an on going project.

I am entering this particular doily into a Creative Art and Craft Exhibition in July, as I am one of the co-organisers of this exhibition hopefully there will be no objections!  The aim is to set up a table as a tea table with a wooden cup cake stand beside it.  At this stage it is doubtful if the stand will work, so far the wood has been cut into largish rounds and the bark left on it. But as the wood drys out it may crack or the rounds may not look right as they will have to be graduated to make the stand.  It also may look too chunky and not delicate enough.  So in the meantime these small coasters have been made with a knitted cup cake as an example.  Isn't the mottled look on the grain of the wood so pretty?

There is always some sort of creative work being done either in the house itself or the garage!

  2. The wood is pretty, but the doily is Absolutely Wonderful! I've just started the doily, after having it on my to-do list for a while. I'm inspired to see you have finished it. It didn't take you very long. Especially as it's not the only one you worked on!

    1. Jane it felt like it took me ages because I have not been able to do any other tatting whilst working on it.

  3. Doily is gorgeous and surely will win something :) The coasters are beautiful and that spalting makes a wood carved piece wonderful, be careful when working with that kind of wood, get good ventilation and wear mask, the saw dust can make you very ill. You may already know that I just didn't always and thought I would mention it.

    1. Thanks Madtatter, the exhibition is not for winning prices but for selling art work, although I am certain no one will buy this one as I will have to charge quite a lot for it Thanks for the tips about the wood, 'Im in the garage' does most of the time wear a mask.

    1. Thanks Grace. It is difficult to explain the cup cake stand and not convinced it will work but if it does will definately show a picture of it.

  8. Your color choices were surely inspired. It blends so beautifully, yet all the colors are distinct. It turned out to be an incredible piece. Those little wooden coasters are very nice and would make great displays for small bits of tatting. I hope the larger piece works out.

    1. Strange at one point I really didn't think the colours would work Marty. And you are right the coasters would help to display small bits of tatting, so you might see them again!

  9. You know, one of the reasons why I own 3 wooden tatting shuttles AND numerous wood lace bobbins is that wood is soooo tactile!! LOL

Love the doiley too!! The knitted cupcake reminds me of my granddaughter in her cupcake hat!! LOL Well Done Sally!!

    1. Agree Pigmini wood is so tactile and I love the smell when it is being worked, just hate the shavings which frequently enter the house! Sort of fond of cupcake themed things too and a hat is the best!!!

  11. I hope you will be allowed to display your doily at the exhibition; it deserves to be shown and seen by many.

I love the wood disks. I suppose, if the bark cracks, you can remove them and polish the sides. I do agree that they have a lot of character in them.

  13. The doily is beautiful. I'm still on Row 7. I had to take a break and do something smaller so I don't become tired. I'm so excited to see a finished doily. What size thread did you use?

    1. Thank you Lequita. The doily does take a long time to make but so worth the effort. I used size 20 thread, Coats and Manuela. Good luck with yours I am sure it will look terrific when finished
